Warwick Country Club has been a landmark in the Warwick Neck area with a history dating back into the early 1930’s. Steeped in tradition and known over the years as a true family club, Warwick Country club has offered members a place of comfort and welcoming throughout the years.
On December 15, 1924, a group of 50 prominent Rhode Islanders purchased the estate and mansion of Colonel George L. Shepley, believing Warwick Neck to be the ideal location for a yacht club.
In its first year, the club elected yachting officers and on July 4, 1925, the first annual regatta was held marking the beginning of the Warwick Country and Yacht Club. During 1925, two tennis courts were added to the two already on the grounds and legendary golf course architect, Donald Ross was employed to design a golf course. Nine holes were constructed.
In 1938, when the club was showing gradual recovery from the difficult time caused by the Great Depression, disaster struck in the form of a hurricane that destroyed the yacht area. By 1940, prosperity had returned and yachts were once again common in front of the club.
But again, this time in 1944, a hurricane struck and destroyed the club’s dock, slips and boathouse. This marked the end of the yachting phase of the club’s history.
Still, the next decade witnessed the gradual growth of the Club. Noted golf course architect, Geoffrey Cornish, was brought for the construction of a second nine holes. In 1954, the day after the dedication of the new nine holes, Hurricane Carol struck with all its fury, but, once again, the members of Warwick Country Club cleaned up and rebuilt.
The following decades saw additions to the clubhouse, the construction of a swimming pool, and paddle tennis added to the Club's list of recreational activities. In 1997, under the direction of golf course architect Ron Prichard, the Club undertook a project to restore its golf course to its original Donald Ross design. Having survived fires, hurricanes and the economic depressions, it continues to preserve the traditions of the past while adapting to changing time Yacht Club. Various hardships threatened the Club’s progress including a fire in the original mansion building, the financial challenges of the Great Depression, the Hurricane of 1938’s ruination of the Club’s yachting facilities, and in 1944, yet another hurricane’s destruction of the renovated boating area.
